TMJ Dysfunction/Jaw Pain/Splints
Some people experience pain from their tempero-mandibular joints. This is the joint between your lower jaw (mandible) and your skull. Due to anatomical variations and para-function (which mainly means clenching and grinding teeth, especially at night) in some individuals, the joint, ligaments and muscles in these areas can become very tender and painful, and jaws can “lock” out of position.
A dentist can assist in alleviating these problems with the use of splints and on-going care and advice. Splints are clear, hard, acrylic appliances which sit on top of your teeth and prevent clenching and grinding, which decreases inflammation and pain.
